Today I smoked my first official Blunt of the Netherlands! Which is ridiculously belated considering that I've already been here for 5 days. I smoked with my roomate, who is a cool guy as well as these awesome kids from (where else) Berkeley, also with us was... the floor alphamale. So we all hung out and had a good time, which puts me seemingly in a position outside of social ostracization. The interesting phenomenon, which I recognize now, however, is that though he is the alphamale, he is not the one in power. The power lies on the shoulders of the three cliquey girls who control our floor. Because the alphamale gains his strength through their attachment to him, if he loses their attention, then he loses his throne. Therefore, it is really their say on who is in and who is out. Such that, even though the alpahmale and I just smoked weed, ate Dutch Waffles, drank Belgium Beer, and stared at the sky to pick out shapes in the clouds, he will suffer no hesitation to turn on me if they decide it to be so. On a different note, I asked the cute girl to pick me up a toothbrush at the store when she went, which she did. In delivering it however, she came in my room, handed it to me, and quickly sped out of the room. I think she was just nervous. I talked to her about it today and thanked her for the favor, which she accepted with a big hug. We were both heading in different directions, but I got the sense that she wanted to hang out with me soon given the way that she left, and the fact that she said, "we should hang out soon." What she said was less important than how she said it though, which reflected a somewhat nerdy nervous connontation, rather than the standard phony artificial cadence that is usually associated with such a statement. Interesting stuff...
